Going Green Tips

Our Max Ride Do Something contest is all about saving the environment. Going green is the new black, but we know there are some people who are really in the dark about global warming. What are some things you guys do to save the environment? What kinds of tips do you have for the SugarLoot community to live an eco-friendlier lifestyle?

i try to avoid using plastic bags. when i go grocery shopping i take my backpack and put my groceries in that or i take my own bags. i got these cute bags for my groceries. they are called baggu. they come in so many different colors. i'm starting to see more people using them too. :)

Emma - now they just released a report saying that you shouldn't reuse plastic water bottles because the chemicals in the plastic can get into you. Here's the report from the Today Show:

Oh yeah my math teacher was telling me about that! I think it sounds crazy, but hey if it's true...you can always buy a water bottle and just continue refilling it instead of buying new plastic ones everytime :] And liz about your baggu bags, that sounds so cool! I should start doing that :D
Oh and yesterday my school had this "adopt a tree" program where you would pick up a baby spruce, and take it home to plant! I thought that was pretty cool :]

many grocery stores are starting programs to recycle plastic bags. you should check with your local store to see if they have a place for your bag. also, i heard somewhere that many people don't recycle shampoo bottles or hairspray bottles when they are done with them. (maybe because they are usually kept in the bathroom and people just throw them out in there.) but, you can make a significant difference by remembering to recycle those materials as well.

well some obvious ones are recycling, using more eco- friendly products for example there are some items of makeup that are completely biodegradable (even the cases they come in) not wasting water (making sure to turn it off when not in use) use your own shopping bags not plastic ones because not all stores have canvas or brown bags, try to incorporate some solar power into your lifestyle if you have the money, use less heat and air conditioning, walk once in a while rather than drive or even plant a tree :)

i think most everything i'm going to say has already been said but there's no harm in repeating it
- use energy efficient lightbulbs and led christmas lights
- print things double sided
- turn off the shower when you shampoo your hair as well as when you shave
- don't buy bottled water, bring your own bottle from home and just refil it
- when you go to get coffee bring your own cup (they usually give you a discount for this as well)
- don't take a plastic bag when you don't need one (Just give it back to the clerk if they give you one)
- use reusable bags for groceries and other things and if you can't do that, put all your purchases into 1 bag instead of getting a new one for each thing at each store
- buy clothes from consignment stores or donate things you no longer need to consignment stores or clothing drives
- buy used dvds and music (tons of stores sell them)
- turn of your computer when you're away from it for more than 1/2 an hour
- rinse dishes in a bowl of water instead of turning on the tap for each one
- only do laundry if it's a full load and wash on warm or cold instead of hot (use hot at first to disolve the soap if you have to but then switch it to cold)
- get things for here instead of to go (most coffee shops have their own porcelain cups)
- take the bus, bike, carpool
- turn the lights off when you're not in a room (it seems obvious but a lot of ppl don't do that)
- put on an extra sweater instead of turning up the thermostat
- don't leave your car in idle
- don't go to drive thrus
- buy food that's locally grown (organic and fair trade is great as well)
- use biodegradable/earth friendly cleaners (seems like an oxymoron but at least try to find the least harmful one possible - usually if they have a really strong smell thats not a good sign)
I'm sure i could find other things but i think that's enough for now. In case you couldn't tell my major is environmental studies ;)
