Welcome to the City:
Chapter 1- Say Good bye to the Countryside
A small, smooth pebble. I picked it up, passed by thumb over it, examined it carefully. And I threw it into the lake in front of me. I watched the ripples form in the water and sighed. I released my grip around my knees and let myself fall onto the soft grass behind me. I observed the formations in the clouds and watched as 2 squirrels fought over an acorn a few meters away from where I lay.
"Scarlett!" my brother shouted.
"Yeah!?" I shouted back.
"The bus is here!"
The bus, I thought in my head as I stood up. "Coming!" I shouted. The bus that will take me to the city... away from my home... Goodbye, my friends. Goodbye, nature. Goodbye, my old life.
As I left the river's shore I walked slowly and took in everything around me. I watched the squirrels, the birds, the bugs, the trees, the flowers, the sky, the sun, everything. A small chipmunk sat on a small rock, looking at me.
"Hey, little guy," I said. "How are you?" I took a step towards it and it didn't move away. It just moved its little lips as if to say "Fine. How are you?" and turned its head in a questionable gaze.
"Not good," I told it, moving closer. "I'm leaving."
"Scarlett!" my brother shouted, scaring away the chipmunk. I sighed.
"What!?" I asked, annoyed.
"Hurry up!"
"Fine!" I shouted as I started to walk faster. Soon I started to run and after a few seconds emerged into a clearing.
In the clearing were my brother, my bags, and a bus. "Where's mom?" I asked.
"Not here," my brother said, handing me on of my bags. "She said she couldn't make it and that she'll miss you."
"Oh okay..." I took my suitcase from him as he handed the other one to the man standing next to the bus. "Careful that's fragile," I said. He probably didn't hear me because he threw my bag into the compartment anyway. I put my other suitcase in myself and then I boarded the bus.
I climbed up the steps to the bus and then I looked at the other people on the bus. There were a few teenagers, some seniors, and one or two families. As I walked down the aisle to get a seat in the back I overheard a commotion between a mother and her child. "I don't wanna move!" the boy exclaimed.
"I know you don't want to move," the mother replied.
"So then why are we?"
"I know you don't see why this is good for you know, but you'll see later," she said. "And you'll have lots of fun too."
"What if no one likes me?"
"I like you don't I?"
"Yes, but--"
"If I like you that means that everyone else will too." The mother smiled at the boy and he smiled back.
"Okay, if you say so."
"I love you, Tommy."
"I love you too, mommy."
I finally found an empty seat and slid over to the window. I stared out at my brother who was leaning against a tree trunk and looking up at the bus. I wondered was he was thinking. I wondered if what he had said about mom was true, I doubted it.
Moms can say anything and a child will believe it. Not me though. After listening to my mom lie to me for 16 years I stopped believing. Watch, no one's going to like that boy and eventually his mother won't love him anymore. It happened to me...
The bus driver entered the bus after locking the suitcase compartment on the side of the bus and closed the door. He put on his seatbelt, adjested the seat, and ignited the vehicle. As the bus started to move my brother stood up and walked away. See ya, little bro and good luck. I watched my brother's outline travel into the distance and disappear, or was that me? Had I disappeared? Its probably true. I've changed, I've grown. I've grown apart.
Like it matters. I closed my eyes and leaned my head against the back of the chair. I couldn't go to sleep so I fished through my purse for my iPod. I turned it on, chose one of the songs and put it on high volume. I closed my eyes again, but this time I wasn't trying to fall asleep. I just wanted to sit there, music blaring in my ears, and think. After a while, I don't know when, I unintentionally fell asleep.
"Wake up!" a masculine voice shouted. A strong hand shook me by my shoulder.
"No," I groaned, turning over in the seat.
"We gotta get off the bus," the voice said again.
I opened my eyes and sat up. "We're already here!?" I exclaimed.
"Yes," the boy said again. I finally reliazed that someone was standing next to me. It was a boy, probably in his late teens, with black hair in a punk shag and blue eyes. He was wearing a black hoodie and jeans. All in all, he was cute.
"I'm sorry," I said. "How long have we been here?"
He laughed. "Don't worry about it," he said. "We just got here."
I put away my iPod--the headphones had fallen out of my ears while I was sleeping--and stood up. We both exited the bus and went to get our suitcases.
I pulled out both of my suitcases and so did he. "Thank you for waking me up," I said. "I'm Scarlett."
"I'm Derek," he says. "Nice to meet you." We both walked down the sidewalk and I called for a taxi, but they all ignored me. I sighed.
"So what brings you to the city?" I asked.
"College, I start this week," Derek said.
"You already graduated? I'm still a junior," I told him. "I'm gonna go to a boarding school from now on."
"Boarding school?"
"Yeah," I said. "I got tired of the country." I tried to ge a taxi to stop for me, but none stopped. "And my mom," I muttered.
"I see," Derek says. Derek signals for a taxi and one immideatly stops.
I scoffed. "How can you get a taxi to stop, but I can't?" He shrugs.
"Wanna share the taxi?"
"Sure," I replied. Derek opens the trunk of the taxi and puts the suitcases away as I get into the taxi.
"We'll split the pay fifty-fifty."
"Alright," I said. I told the taxi driver the name of the school and the adress and he nodded before driving off the curb.
We didn't have much to say to each other (we'd only known each other for half an hour or so), but somehow we managed to keep the status of a good conversation. I learned alot about Derek. He was originally from Illinois, and loved soccer and Panic! At the Disco (just like me, exempt the Illinois part). He played guitar and wanted to be a musician in the future, though he was trying to get a degree in education. Unfortunetly, the school was closer than I assumed and I had to leave. I payed the cab driver the amount of money currently on the cash meter and got out of the car.
Derek grabbed me by the elbow. "Can I talk to you again?" he asked.
"You can call me," I stated. "My number is 555-5204."
Derek repeated the number under his breath. "Got it," he said.
I got my suitcases from the trunk and then closed the door. Derek saluted to me as I pulled my bags onto the sidewalk. I waved as the cab drove off.
Chapter 2 - Roommates
The school was a large building. It was surrounded by a tall brick wall and the gate was as tall as the wall. It was black and plants were designed into it. Next to the gate there was a sign. It read "Welcome to Westbrook High School" in large golden letter. Under that it read "Gates open 5 a.m. to 10 a.m." I'd have to be back at school before 10 o' clock everyday unless I wanted to be locked out and I didn't want that.
I entered the building and noticed that the school was surrounded by a large field of grass, trees grew in some areas and a lot of the sidewalks were dotted with bushes. There was 1 big building and two small ones. The big one was where the classrooms and dorm were, the bigger one of the other two must be the gym and the other one must be some kind of rec room where the students can hang out.
I picked up my bags and climbed up the steps to the main building. The hallways were empty, the students were probably either in their dorms, outside, or in class. There was a sign on the wall pointing in the directions of the office and many classrooms. It also listed that the dorms were on floors 3, 4, and 5.
The office was easy to find. It was the fifth door on the right and it read "Office" in bold letters. I entered the small room. There was a large desk in the back corner of the room with a computer, a telephone, and a plant on it. An African American woman wearing thick glasses sat behind the desk, typing something into the computer. I walked up to her. "Hello," I said.
"Hello," the woman replied. "How may I help you?"
"I'm Scarlett Bloodstone," I told her. "I'm starting school this week."
The woman entered my name into the computer and then after reading what it said turned to me.
"Oh yes," the woman said. "You're the new student. I'm Ms. Dudley." Ms. Dudley typed a few more things into the computer and then pressed the print key. She took the paper and handed it to me. "This is your dorm room, your schedule, and a map of the school."
"Thank you," I said.
"Your dorm is on the 5th floor. If you have any problems just come tell me."
"Okay." I picked up my bags and was about to leave when I realized something. Fifth floor!? I turned around. “There wouldn’t happen to be an elevator near by would there?” I asked.
Ms. Dudley smiled. "Of course, the school has a main hallway on each floor. You saw it when you came in I suppose. The 1st floor hallway will contains some classrooms, the library, bathrooms, and the elevator. The second floor will be mostly the same except no library. The other three floors will only be dorms, but in the main hallway you can find your dorm advisor’s office.”
“Uh, thank you,” I said. “That’s good to know.” I picked up my bags and went back the way I had come. I turned left into the main hallway and finally found the elevator. I noticed that there were stairs in the hallway adjoining the main hallway. I pressed the button to call for the elevator and then I waited. There was only one elevator and apparently the last person to have used had taken it all the way to the fifth floor.
Finally the elevator reached the first floor and the doors began to open. There was a girl inside. She had brown hair in a long braid and green eyes. She was wearing brown capris and a floral tank top. She was also wearing a bejeweled brown hat and an assortment of bracelets. I suspect she wasn't suspecting to see anyone waiting for the elevator, much less someone she'd never seen before. Not just a person, but a person she’d never seen before. She inspected me. “You new here?” she asked.
I nodded. “Yes,” I blurted out in an awkward fashion, not at all as cool as I had tried to make it sound.
“Where you from?”
“A small town 10 miles from here.”
She thought about what I said and then replied. “You’re a country girl?”
“I… I guess,” I told her.
“Welcome to the city,” the girl said, “and good luck… Country Girl” She smirked and walked away. She exited the school doors, but I didn't look away until the doors closed behind her.
I picked up my bags and pulled them into the elevator and pressed floor 5. While I awaited my arrival on the fifth floor landing I read over the papers Ms. Dudley had given me. First I looked at my schedule, trying to memorize the room numbers and the names of the teachers; Room 203, Ms. Awad, Social Studies, room 205, Ms. Nasci, Language Arts, room 210, Mr. Eugene, reading, room 220, Mrs. O’ John, calculus, room 232, Mr. Montalto, science, room 112, Mr. Pouca, music. I had gym too, but that was only on certain days of the month, in which I didn’t have music.
I looked at the map next. I tried to figure out a route from each class so on my first day of classes I wouldn’t end up being late because I got lost. Most of my classes were on the first floor, except for music and gym. As I expected, the building towards the end of the school premises was the gym. For lunch it seemed they let us go wherever we wanted in the summer, but even so the cafeteria was in far left corner of the school. It wasn’t very large, it probably just contained the kitchen and a few set of tables. I remember noticing more benches outside the school; probably for sunny days when the students wanted to dine outside.
I examined the dorm paper last. I was in dorm 534 with two other girls called Liliath Stone and Deviliana Clutch. Under the things that were typed there was a handwritten message.
Hello, new person! Your name’s Scarlett, right? Well then, hello, Scarlett! lol I’m Liliath and Deviliana says hi.
~ Hi! ^_^ ~ That was her lol Hurry up ‘cause we’ll be waiting to meet you!
A message to me from my new dorm mates I assumed. There was a picture and a key attached to the letter. The letter showed 2 girls. One of the girls had green eyes and brown hair with red streaks. The other had blond hair and brown eyes. They each had an arm around the other and I could immediately tell that they were best friends. I don't know. Something about the picture just immediately made me think that.
The elevator finally stopped and the doors opened. I stepped out and searched the halls around me for dorm 534. Finally I found it and set down my bags. I took out the key and unlocked the door. I walked inside and studied the room. I was standing in a short hallway that lead into a larger room. It contained the door leading to the bathroom and the closet. The walls were decorated with pictures of various breaks and vacations ad events that had happened in the time that I hadn't been here. They showed various people at the beach, a skate park, a concert, a museum, and maybe a mall somewhere in the area, but in every single picture were the two people from the picture, Liliath and Deviliana. I was scrutinizing one of the photos when a girl came bounding out of the larger room. It was the girl with the blonde hair. "Oh," she said, almost as if she was disappointed about something, "Hello."
"Hi," I said quietly. "I'm Scarlett, your new roommate."
The girl looked up at me, suddenly more excited. "Oh! Scarlett!" she exclaimed. “Hi! I'm Liliath!" She took me in a large hug almost as if I was a friend she hadn't seen in a long time. "It’s so nice to finally meet you!"
"It’s nice to meet you too," I said. "So if you’re Liliath then where would Deviliana be?”
“Oh she’s on very hush-hush business,” she exaggerated the ‘very’ as though Deviliana was doing so important and secret that the world would fall into chaos if I knew. She’s preppy. That was one of the first thoughts that came to my head after spending, but 2 minutes with Liliath. I don’t do well with preps. I known to be more of a tomboy, preps didn’t fit in in my reality. Maybe in theirs they did, but not in mine. It’ll take a while for me to finally understand her, and hopefully I won’t eventually start acting like her. That would feel unnatural.
“So I guess I gotta show you around the dorm, right?" Liliath asked.
"Sure," I said softly. “Why not?” Liliath nodded and started looking around her, mumbling something too low for me to hear.
"Yeah!" she whispered. "Okay. This" she said, walking over to the bulletin board, "is our bulletin board. Here we put photos, test reminders, fliers for upcoming events, and when auditions are for extra-curriculum groups are, etc, etc!"
"Etc, etc," I mumbled. Liliath walked towards the door to the closet and opened the doors. The closet was a small 3 yards by 3 yards square room. There was a pole going around three sides of the closet, but all the space was taken up. I studied the clothes inside. About half of the clothes were colors like pink, light blue, silver, etc. and the other half was black, red, lime green, etc. I could immediately tell the difference between the two girls, even though I hadn't even met the other yet. Liliath continued, "This of course is the closet." She walked inside and started moving some clothes around. Soon one side of the closet was almost bare. "You can put as many of your clothes there until we get organized later." I nodded.
Liliath exited the closet and I followed her. She led me into the larger room, which I now saw was larger than I expected. There was a single bed, already occupied, against the far wall. On the other wall was a bunk bed, the top bunk occupied. There was a large, white dresser separating the two beds with a lamp, a flower, two photos, and a book on top of it. In the right corner of the room there was a computer atop an, also white, desk. On the left wall was a small rectangular bookshelf with a TV sitting on top of it. Since the single bed and the top bunk were already occupied I put two and two together and came up with the conclusion that: “The bottom bunk’s my bed?”
Liliath nodded. “Yep,” she replied. “The top bunk’s Devi’s and that one over there,” she pointed to the single, “is mine. The top two drawers of the dresser are taken so you can have the bottom one.” I nodded again. “We got this TV here for, well, television viewing and we have the desk over there,” Liliath swung both of her arms to her right and pointed towards the desk, “to write reports and do other stuff like that and just to play on it… sometimes…” She laughed. “And I think that’s everything.” I smiled to seem polite.
“I’ll go put my stuff away then.” She smiled brightly and said okay. I walked back to the closet and opened my suitcase I took my T-shirts and put them on the bottom row of a long shelf where other shirts were. “Do you any extra hangers?” I shouted from the closet.
“Yes,” Liliath replied. I waited.
“Can I get them?” I asked.
“Sure,” she replied as I rolled my eyes. “A little slow, are we?” I whispered low enough for only me to hear. Liliath skipped into the closet and handed me some hangers. “Thanks,” I muttered. She smiled and skipped out; I heard the sound of the TV. I sighed and continued to hang my clothes. I was about done when I heard the door open.
“Lilly!” someone shouted and I immediately recognized the voice. “Oh, it’s you,” I heard her say. I turned around and sure enough it was the girl I met earlier.
“Are your Deviliana?!” I asked shocked.
“Yeah, what’s it to you, Country Girl?”
“I’m kind of you’re new room mate. You look different than from the pictures.”
She shrugged. “People change, whatever.” That’s when Liliath – Lilly as Deviliana had called her – came waltzing in.
“Devi!” She shouted enthusiastically. “Meet Scarlett! She’s our new room mate.”
“We’ve met,” Devi retorted.
“Well that’s good then,” Lilly replied. I bit my lip; I felt a long awkward silence forming. I continued putting my things away.
I didn’t start my classes until tomorrow so after I was done putting away my things and Lilly and Deviliana had left to go who-knows-where I didn’t have much to do. I grabbed my purse and pulled out my cell phone. No missed calls. I sighed. I hope he calls soon, I thought, and the phone rang. I stared blankly at it and felt it vibrate in my hand. “Weird,” I muttered, and answered the phone. “Hello, Scar speaking.”
“Uh, Scarlett?” the person on the other line said.
“Derek!” I exclaimed. I started fixing my hair for some reason, though I knew he couldn’t see me. “How are you?”
“Great, what about you?” he asked.
“Fine I guess.”
“You guess?” he inquired.
“Yeah, I don’t my roommate likes me,” I explained.
“Bummer,” he said.
I sighed. “What you? How are your dorm mates?”
“I don’t have any!”
“Huh?!”
“I have a single,” he explained in a bragging tone.
“I dislike you,” I stated, he just laughed. I rolled my eyes.
“It’s been nice talking to you, but I have to go now. Add my number,” he stated.
I sighed again. “Alright then, bye,” I said and hung up.
“Oh my god!” Lilly shouted from the hallway. “Scarlett, were you just talking to a guy?” I hadn’t noticed she’d arrived.
“Yeah, I guess I was. Where’s Deviliana?” I inquired. She ignored my question and started asking me various questions.
“Who is he? What’s his name? How old is he? When and how did you meet? Do you like him?”
“His name is Derek, he is 19, (“Whoa.”) we met this morning on my bus ride here (Really? Wow.),” I paused at the last question. Lilly stared at me, waiting for an answer. I sighed. “Yes, I like him.”
“Ooh!” she exclaimed. I rolled my eyes and grabbed my pajamas.
“I’m going to bed!” I shouted. (“Aw!”)
I took a quick shower and then changed into my PJs. Lily was wathing TV when I returned. She made a face as I walked by. "What grade is he in?" she whispered.
"Thirteenth grade," I replied. She appeared confused but I didn't really pay attention. I buried myself in my covers and pretended to be asleep. I heard Devi come in, she and Lilly talked a bit but sometime during their greetings I fell asleep.
